At least 10 people have lost their lives after being involved in a road crash in Homa Bay County late Sunday evening, December 14.
The deaths occurred on the spot. Police confirmed the accident.
Citizen TV reported that the accident happened at a spot along the Kisii-Kisumu Highway in Chabera, Rachuonyo East Sub-County.
It was a multivehicle crash involving two lorries and a private van.
Reports indicate the victims, all from the same family, were returning from a wedding ceremony in Kakamega County.
They were en route to Nyamira County.
The injured were rushed to various hospitals near the scene of the accident.
Nyamira governor Amos Nyaribo expressed his concern over the rising number of deadly accidents, this coming just hours after another one along the Nyamira-Kericho Highway.
Nyaribo called on the relevant authorities to intervene and curb the carnages that seem to be getting rampant.
“Yet again, our county has been thrown deeper into mourning, with at least 10 people reported dead following a road accident at Chabera, along Kisii-Kisumu Road, this evening. The rising number of accidents, claiming lives when people are supposed to be celebrating, is a serious concern, not only for Nyamira but across the country. We reiterate our call on relevant agencies to rise to the occasion and act decisively now. Meanwhile, our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and relatives who have lost their loved ones. Quick recovery to those admitted to hospital,” the governor said in his statement.
As earlier hinted, the Homa Bay crashed after another one near Ekerenyo along the Kericho-Nyamira Highway, where several people were feared to have died.
The accident occurred on Saturday night, December 13, and involved a Quarser Sacco 14-seater PSV shuttle and a trailer.
The two vehicles, one coming from Ekerenyo and the other from Ikonge, collided head-on.
Initial reports confirmed that at least six people died, while others sustained injuries.
Governor Nyaribo later announced that county emergency teams had been dispatched to assist the injured at the scene.
