Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Paul’s neighbour, Collins Cheruiyot, narrated the unfortunate incident while revealing more painful details.
“Paul and the other victims were heading home from Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital. They were in a convoy transporting the body of Paul’s brother, Samwel Kibet Rotich. Samwel’s body was being taken home for a vigil ahead of his burial the following day. He had been in the morgue for a week after passing away on Thursday, December 4. Sadly, Paul died the following week on the same day,” he explained.
How old was Paul when he passed away?
Paul, 57, and the other passengers in the ill-fated car were not carrying Samwel’s body, as it was already in another vehicle.
They had remained behind to follow up on a matter at the hospital before setting off to catch up with the rest of the convoy.
“The car was completely destroyed. Samwel and Paul were very close; they were each other’s confidants. Paul took care of Samwel during his hospitalisation,” Cheruiyot added.
How old was Samwel when he died?
Samwel, 67, had been ill for some time. In June last year, he was diagnosed with chronic throat cancer.
Before the diagnosis, he had been in good health until the illness worsened in the last three months of his life.
“Initially, we used to take him to dispensaries and clinics, but later we were forced to take him to a proper hospital for thorough check-ups,” Cheruiyot continued.
When and where will Paul be buried?
He added that the two brothers came from a poor background and were part of a family of 15 siblings, leaving behind two widows.
“No sooner had we buried Samwel than the devastated family was forced to start preparing for Paul’s burial. The biggest challenge is finances. We have already started reaching out to area leaders for support. The bereaved family also needs counselling, which is currently being offered by pastors.
More importantly, the widows and children need help, as the two brothers lived in poverty and have left behind children and wives with no source of income. When Samwel was ill, the family spent a lot of money on his treatment, even selling some property. Paul will be buried on Tuesday, December 23, in the same compound as his brother,” he added.
