The two talked and started having a relationship; the man began sharing stories, saying that he had separated from his wife, and she believed him.
“He got me my own place, and we lived together. Two years later, the woman resurfaced, and he asked me what he could do, as she had his children. I was okay and said I was ready to be the second wife, but with this woman, it was hostility all the way; whenever she found us, she used to attack us,” she said.
“By the time I was meeting the father of my children, his dad had just passed on. The father of my children said that his wife allegedly mistreated his father, who had diabetes, which made him blind,” she added.
According to Njoki, her co-wife refused to live with her father-in-law, mistreated him, burned his things, and despite being blind, he was asked to clean up after himself. The same was repeated with the mother-in-law, and now the sisters of her husband cannot access their ancestral home either.

“My husband started ailing in 2023 and passed away in February 2024, and when he passed on, they tried to hide it from me; we were sidelined from burial arrangements, and I learned about it when it was two days to the burial,” she said.
“He was not a poor person, and he was trying to build a future for his kids; I had been raising kids with this man, and they never suffered,” she added.

What happened to Njoki’s husband?
When the father of Njoki’s children died, he was taken to Montezuma Kabati, and it took a friend of Njoki’s to go to the meeting to pretend to be his friend so they would know his burial venue.
“We had sued her and the funeral home not to release the body until DNA samples were taken to match my kids and prove he was their father,” she said.
“Going by the time they had scheduled the funeral, our case was not supposed to interfere with the burial, and the judge was there by 7:30 am. While we were in court, we were sent photos that the burial had already been done,” she added.
Njoki’s husband was buried by 6:30 am; his first wife went to the morgue by 4:30 am and took his body.

“When we went back to court, the magistrate gave us a court order to visit the grave. He wasn’t buried by any of his family members or friends; it was just 10 people, including his first wife,” she said.
“Actually, his first son never buried his dad. I sued to have his body exhumed, and his sisters joined in, but at some point, I ran out of funds, and my sisters-in-law are not that well off,” lamented Njoki.
She later fell and couldn’t go to court, and after missing court two times, her lawyer withdrew because she had not paid the legal fee.
“Eventually, the court dismissed our case,” she said.
Why wasn’t Njoki with her ailing husband?
According to Njoki, her husband started ailing in 2022 and began the process of medication. He was told his lungs were swollen, and doctors were supposed to remove water from his back. At Kenyatta National Hospital, he was told he had cancer of the lungs, diabetes, and hypertension.
“I would go when he called, so as not to fight with this other woman. In December 2023, he was very ill and called me to take his kids, and I dropped them off, but he was too weak to come downstairs. The woman found them and hit my son with a rod on the back, and his dad told me to come pick up the kids; they will die there,” she said.
By the time the man was calling his children, he had finished treatment, and according to his sister, he got better. There were some meds that were supposed to be brought from the US, but when their cousin was about to ship the meds, the woman and her brother said they had found the medication here.
“The man told his sister that he had been given some meds, and it didn’t take him well,” said Njoki.
How did Njoki’s life change?
After Njoki lost her husband, all friends and family members left, and she even had to change schools for her kids from Kileleshwa Umoja to Utawala.
“I’m technically homeless, yet my husband had investments,” she said.
“It’s not about me, it’s about these children; how are they going to live? You know how businesses are doing. You have siblings, but they don’t want to listen to you; those who know me know that I have a big heart and have been a problem solver,” she added.
Njoki cautioned people to be cautious about their children. “When you are helping, think about your kids, because even your own blood will turn against your kids if you don’t have anything.”
“If there is a lawyer who can help pro bono, please step in. I just want my children to get a basic life because I was part of their daddy’s growth,” she said.
“Just remember these kids should not suffer, and we also need to visit their father because this is a man I knew for 24 years. As much as I am the second wife, if there is a first wife seeing this, they should create an environment for talks, but Wairimu refused to talk to me,” she added.
When TUKO.co.ke contacted the first wife, she picked up the call, and upon learning that it was about Njoki, she hung up and said “nonsense.” She never picked up the call again.
Woman dumps husband after he marries second wife
A Sudanese woman who moved to Canada has got women in Africa talking after she walked out of her marriage with five kids because her husband married another woman. Tabisa alleged that South Sudanese men don’t divorce women; they just introduce their wives to a new woman in the name of polygamy, and she was not going to have it.
Women from Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, and other countries have shown their love during this difficult moment and vowed to stand with her.
