As investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continue to seek answers to the tragic death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, new details have shown that into the ill-fated vehicle he was in was not registered in his name.

The luxury vehicle he was driving was crashed into ,by a speeding Busia-bound Climax Bus ferrying passengers from Nairobi.

The accident happened at Karai, a black spot on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
According to the DCI, Jirongo was driving a Mercedes Benz vehicle, registration details KCZ 350C.
The details of the car as borne on the website of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) copy of records indicate it is owned by Smart Cars Limited, an import company in Nairobi.
Even with the NTSA details not showing him as the direct owner of the ill-fated car, Jirongo had used it for a time.
The former MP’s association with the second car was made public in December 2020 when he was exposed for having caused an accident in Nairobi, injuring a boda boda rider.
How Cyrus Jirongo’s car crashed on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway
Surveillance cameras at the Eagol fuel station recorded the tragic sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Footage showed Jirongo’s car entering the station at 2:18:43 from the Nairobi direction.
The vehicle passed the pumps without stopping to refuel and exited, appearing ready to rejoin the lane heading back toward Nairobi.
The car then moved into the lane of oncoming traffic, seemingly in an attempt to align with the correct direction.
However, a Climax bus travelling at high speed appeared at 2:19:25, leaving Jirongo no time to switch lanes.
The bus collided with the Mercedes Benz almost instantly, causing the smaller vehicle to spin, as indicated by its brake lights, before being dragged approximately 25 metres from the point of impact.
Smoke was seen rising from the car, and the lack of movement inside suggested the occupant had died on the spot.
The bus eventually came to a halt about 50 metres away, and moments later, a person approached Jirongo’s vehicle.

Peter Kamau, one of the first responders, recalled rushing to the scene immediately after hearing the loud crash.

He explained that he and nine others attempted to rescue the driver, but the car doors were jammed, forcing them to break in using an axe.
Kamau, a motorcycle mechanic from Karai, observed that the victim was alone in the vehicle and had slumped over the steering wheel with his face tilted upwards.

He noted that accidents were common at the location, which is considered a blackspot, and that he had rushed outside upon hearing the bang since he lived only a few metres from the highway.
He added that the responders did not initially know the identity of the driver and were simply trying to help, but unfortunately, the man was already dead, and they had to wait for police officers to arrive.
Kamau, aged 21, further reported that inside the car, they discovered a half‑finished bottle of alcohol and a packet of cigarettes.
He described how shaken bus passengers remained at the scene for about ten minutes before another vehicle arrived to pick them up.
According to him, more than 40 passengers had alighted, with some recording videos and taking photos, while a traffic jam built up on the lane Jirongo was supposed to use after rejoining the highway.
