Kakamega – At least eight people lost their lives while seven others were seriously injured following a tragic road accident.

The Tuesday night incident occured at Mukhonje trading centre in Lugari constituency.

The crash happened along the busy Eldoret–Webuye highway and involved a public service matatu and a truck ferrying fertiliser.

The accident caused panic among residents and motorists, with emergency responders rushing to the scene to assist the victims.

How did the Kakamega accident happen?

Eyewitnesses said the matatu, which was headed from Eldoret towards Webuye, rammed into the rear of the lorry that had been parked on the roadside.

The collision reportedly occurred as the matatu driver attempted to overtake other vehicles, only to hit the stationary truck, leading to the deadly impact.

Confirming the incident, Maturu sub-location Assistant Chief Samuel Wamalwa said the matatu driver is among those who lost their lives in the crash.
