Jirongo died on December 13 after being involved in a tragic road accident at a spot along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
His Mercedes Benz was crashed by a speeding Busia-bound Climax bus ferrying passengers from Nairobi.
To be interrogated by the detectives were the owners of the Toyota Probox car that was captured by the surveillance cameras at Eagol fuel station.
Jirongo had driven into the station to make a U-turn moments before the crash. The Probox was seen driving closely past him.
Whilst Jirongo drove past the pumps without stopping to fuel, the Probox entered the furthest pumps and stopped, and had its bonnet opened, this as the accident happened moments later.
Who owns Probox that followed Cyrus Jirongo?
The Probox’s closeness with Jirongo’s car sparked speculation, prompting the DCI to find out what its mission was at the petrol station.
They found the owners of the car in Nakuru.
“A team of detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview the individuals linked to motor vehicle registration number KDJ 564E, a white Toyota Probox, which was captured on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station, entering the premises shortly after the deceased drove in and exited,” the DCI said.
According to the detectives, the Probox is owned by William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly, and which is also managed by his wife.
They told the detectives that the car had been hired on December 11, two days before the crash, by one Denis Kipyegon.
Denis had intended to drive with his family to Nairobi to collect their child, who had landed from Mexico.
The son’s flight landed at around 10 pm Friday, December 12, and after completing clearance formalities, the family commenced their return journey to Keringet shortly after midnight.
What Probox driver told DCI over Cyrus Jirongo’s tragic crash
While traveling from Nairobi and upon reaching Karai, the site of the accident, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to top up their wiper fluid because of poor visibility.
During the pause, they saw the deceased leaving the station and heading toward Nairobi.
Moments later, as they continued refilling, a loud crash was heard and they witnessed a bus dragging the deceased’s car.
