Jirongo died on December 13 in a car accident after his car collided head-on with a Climas bus along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Did Cyrus Jirongo see his wife before he died?
During his memorial mass at Citam, one of Jirongo’s wives, Ann, who was living with him in Nairobi, recalled events that happened before they were told of the veteran politician’s death.
“On December 12, Jamhuri Day, Cyrus called me at around 12:30 p.m., and we spoke for about 15 minutes and 25 seconds. He called again at around 2:30 pm and asked me where I was, and I told him that I was in the supermarket. He said he wanted to see me, so he drove to where I was. When he reached the parking, he told me he was outside. I put the trolley aside and went to see him. I sat in the car, we had a conversation, and then he left. He told me he was going back to the office to build his castles. He told me I am going to dream and build my castles in the office, and later he was going to see the speaker, Moses Wetang’ula,” she said.

According to Ann, Jirongo Facetimed her at around 4 pm, and told him that he never even went to the office and that he went to the house and was feeling tired.
“When he called, he was in the chair. He told me he had been sleeping in the chair for about two hours. And that was the last time I spoke to Cyrus. The time he came to the supermarket was the last time I saw him. I had a restless night that night. I did not sleep well. The feelings I had were really strong. I looked at my phone and it was exactly midnight. I could not decode what I was feeling, so I took a screenshot of my phone, it is the picture of my tribute, and I could hear voices saying it was over,” she said.
When did Ann find out about Jirongo’s death?
Ann said she was called at 3 am, and when she picked up, it was not her husband on the phone but someone else telling her about an accident.
“I asked where he was and if I could speak to him, and they told me he was involved in an accident and was unconscious but was being attended to by the doctors. I continued talking, but I asked my daughter Sonia to accompany me, and we started driving towards Naivasha. I could also not make sense when I was told that the accident occurred in Naivasha because he had no plans of travelling,” she added.
She also called her husband’s friends, who followed her and her daughter towards the accident scene. She also called her husband’s doctor.
When they were told about Jirong’o’s death, they stopped driving and cried before alerting the other two wives and some of the kids.
“It was so shocking to speak to someone and then later be told he is no more,” she added.

What did DCI say about Jirongo’s death?
Elsewhere, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) interrogated the owner and occupants of a white Toyota Probox that was seen on CCTV near the scene of the fatal accident involving Jirongo.
The vehicle’s owner, Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader William Mutai, and the individuals who had hired it, stated they only stopped at the petrol station to refill wiper fluid and briefly used their headlights to illuminate the crash site before continuing their journey.
While investigations are ongoing, the DCI has ruled out foul play, concluding that the incident was a tragic traffic accident involving a head-on collision with a bus.
