The incident happened near Dho-Goye area of Usigu sub-county, a recently established administrative unit carved out of the larger Bondo sub-county.

According to Usenge Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairman John Ochieng’, the boat had seven fishermen on board when it was hit by strong winds while on the lake, causing it to overturn.

The sudden change in weather reportedly caught the fishermen off guard, leaving them with little chance to respond.

Five of the fishermen drowned in the incident, while one survivor managed to stay alive by clinging to the overturned boat until fellow fishermen arrived and pulled him to safety.

Ochieng’ said rescue efforts began immediately after the accident was reported.

So far, two bodies have been retrieved from the lake and taken to the Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Search and rescue teams, with the help of local fishermen, are still combing the waters in an ongoing effort to recover the remaining bodies.
