This came as pressure mounted over accountability in a disaster that left two people feared trapped and sparked a large-scale rescue operation.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 2, the Authority confirmed that the building, a proposed mixed-use development, came down in the early hours of the morning along Muhoho Avenue, near South C Shopping Centre and Nairobi South Hospital.

NCA reported that the construction project stood on plot number 68/1306 in South C Ward, Lang’ata Sub-county.

According to the NCA, the developer on record is Abyan Consulting Limited, which also doubled as the contractor for the project under registration number 77721/B/0923.

The Authority said the development had been registered on November 8, 2023, but was non-compliant at the time of the collapse.

The NCA further identified the architect on record as Gideon Chege Mwangi, the structural engineer as Peter Kimani Kireru, and the quantity surveyor as James Kirika Njoroge.

The contractor was registered under the NCA 4 category for building works, while the sole director of the company is Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf.

“The National Construction Authority (NCA) confirms the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in South C. Nairobi, near the South C Shopping Centre and Nairobi South Hospital, which occurred in the early hours of the morning of Friday, 2nd January 2026,” read the statement in part.

NCA reiterated its mandate under the National Construction Authority Act No. 41 of 2011, saying it remains committed to public safety, accountability in the construction industry.

How quickly were emergency teams deployed to South C?

The authority said emergency teams were deployed immediately after receiving the incident report and that search-and-rescue operations were continuing alongside efforts to secure the site.

“Upon receiving the incident report, emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site. At the time of issuing this statement, search-and-rescue operations and site securing activities were ongoing, in coordination with relevant emergency and security agencies,” NCA stated.

The Kenya Red Cross said the incident happened early in the morning and confirmed that two workers were trapped at the site.

By mid-morning, rescue efforts were still ongoing, with the site sealed off as teams worked to secure the area and remove debris.

Kenya Power was also involved in the operation to address safety concerns related to the electricity infrastructure around the collapsed structure.

However, frustration and anger simmered among residents and eyewitnesses at the scene, some of whom questioned the speed and preparedness of the emergency response.

How did Jalang’o react to South C building collapse?

The incident has also drawn sharp political reaction, with Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, strongly condemning what he described as a culture of impunity in the construction sector.

He accused some developers of colluding with corrupt officials and using political connections to bypass safety rules.

The legislator noted that the collapsed building was among those previously flagged by the South C Residents’ Association.

He also questioned how some private high-rise projects are completed in just over a year, while government housing developments often take at least two years, calling the trend alarming.

In response to the collapse, Jalang’o called for an immediate halt to all ongoing construction projects in South C to allow for fresh inspections.
