In a tweet on Monday, January 12, Safaricom explained how the health authority can deduct money from a user’s M-Pesa account without prompting the customer to enter his secret PIN.

The statement by Safaricom came after an M-Pesa user expressed concerns about SHA deducting money directly from his account without his authorisation.

The customer, @UCollince, disclosed that the national health insurer began deducting funds from his account after his enrolment in the SHA Lipa Mdogo Mdogo service.

He sought the firm’s explanation on how it is possible for SHA to deduct funds without his M-Pesa PIN being used, like in any other transaction.

“Good morning @SafaricomPLC. Kindly explain how @_shakenya is able to deduct money from our M-Pesa accounts without prompting us to enter our PIN. This started happening after we registered for the Lipa Mdogo Mdogo service. We need clarification on how this authorisation works,” the M-Pesa user said.

In its response, Safaricom admitted that it’s possible for SHA to directly deduct M-Pesa money without sending a notification for the PIN.

The telco explained that the incident can happen if a user has activated M-PESA Ratiba, which is a standing order service on M-PESA, and enabled SHA to auto-deduct.

“Hello Collince, apologies for that. If you have activated M-PESA Ratiba which is a standing order service on M-PESA and enabled SHA to auto deduct, this can happen without prompting for the PIN,” Safaricom said.
