What happened to Jamhuri Boys’ High School student?
On January 15, the young woman identified as Brenda Akinyi and her son arrived at the Nairobi-based school but were told they needed to raise KSh 55,000 for school fees and other requirements to be enrolled.
The stunned pair were rooted to the ground and began crying when they were told that an empty box bearing an old blanket was not enough to get them into class.

A social media user identified as Being Wendy, who was passing by, saw the pair. After inquiring what was wrong, she was told what had transpired.
The touched woman sent photos of the mother and son, whose hopes had been shattered, and in the snaps, the two were crying because it seemed like the end of the road for them.
Many social media users came out, sharing their money in hopes of sending him to school, and just like that, their fortunes changed.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Akinyi said she couldn’t believe how quickly things had turned around.
“When I was sent away, I was supposed to go and seek help from my Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of County Assembly (MCA),” she said.
“They later saw me return with other Kenyans who were helping me with the registration as I went to buy the required items from the store,” she added.

What is Brenda Akinyi’s situation at home?
As previously mentioned, Akinyi is a widow, but that’s just one of her many challenges. When they returned after burying her husband, her family of five did not have anywhere to live.
“I had to send my kids to live with other people, as I check on them daily and stay with my friend,” she said.
The young man, Ian Godfrey, was also living with another family, and Akinyi was so happy that he was going to be in school, as it would at least give them some space and peace of mind.
“He had given up and was even offering to go and work on a construction site when I told him we should just try, and that’s how we ended up here with nothing,” said the woman who hustles as a mama fua to feed her children.
