African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has issued a statement regarding the just-concluded Uganda election.

In a statement on Saturday, January 17, Youssouf congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for winning the Ugandan presidential election.

Did Bobi Wine reject the Uganda election results?

Youssouf also commended the conduct of the elections in Uganda, despite the main opposition candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, rejecting the results announced by the electoral commission.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on January 15, 2026,” Youssouf said.

AUC hailed former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, for leading the joint African Union/Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)/Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

“The chairperson expresses sincere appreciation to Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his “sterling leadership” of the Joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda,” the AUC chair said.

What did the AUC chair say about Ugandan elections?

The AUC chair further reiterated the commission’s commitment to promoting democracy and effective governance in Africa.

He applauded the Ugandan citizens for committing to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security and development of their country.

“The Chairperson further reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance on the continent, while applauding the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development,” the statement read.

Museveni was re-elected president of Uganda for a 7th term with 7.9 million votes (71.6%), the electoral commission announced.
