A chief magistrate at the Milimani Law Courts ordered the deportation of a Congolese national who has lived and worked in Kenya since 2017, despite his deep family and professional ties to the country.

The man, a French teacher married to a Kenyan citizen and father to a young child, was charged over an expired visa even though he had already begun the process of regularising his immigration status.
Why Congolese man risks deportation
Prosecutors told the court that he had failed to update his legal documents in time, presenting his travel records and immigration history as evidence.

“You failed to update your immigration status and you are, therefore, charged with the offence before court,” the prosecutor said.
In his defence, the teacher appealed to the court’s compassion, explaining that he had never been arrested or involved in any criminal activity since moving to Kenya nearly a decade ago.
He described himself as a law-abiding resident who contributes to society through education, urging the court to consider his character, family, and positive record.
Kenyans react to deportation case
While the court fined him KSh 40,000 or sentenced him to two months in jail, it further ordered that he be deported after paying the fine.
The move has stunned observers and raised questions about the fairness and proportionality of the ruling.
Some expressed concern that the decision could separate a family and disrupt the life of someone who has built a home, career, and community in Kenya.

Chofrii risks deportation from Germany
Meanwhile, Germany-based TikTok comedian Geoffrey, alias Chofrii, is on the verge of being deported home after he was allegedly reported to the authorities.
Chofrii got into trouble with the law for allegedly picking fights with some netizens, after which one of his friends set him up.
In one of his livestreams, the social media personality broke down and claimed that he had been included in Germany’s criminal list, which resulted in him losing his job and place to stay.
