Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, has made a heartfelt appeal to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga, urging him to help the family secure justice for their slain son.

Ojwang, a teacher and the family’s only child, died in police custody on June 8, 2025, days after he was arrested at his family home in Homa Bay.
How did Albert Ojwang die?
His arrest reportedly followed allegations that he had defamed Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

A postmortem conducted later that month revealed that Ojwang died as a result of physical assault, raising serious concerns about police conduct. However, six months on, the court is yet to determine who was responsible for his death.
Albert Ojwang’s dad’s message to Oburu?
Speaking during an ODM event in Kisumu on Saturday, January 24, Meshack recounted the pain of losing his son and pleaded for intervention to ensure the case does not fade into obscurity.
“You all know how I lost my son, Albert. I don’t want to repeat the story. My appeal is to Mzee Oburu. Things have been difficult because we lost Raila Odinga after my son’s death; I would have taken my problems to him. For now, we have only one request: our only son was taken from our home by the government, and we want justice so that the whole world can see. He was taken from my hands, politely. But when I followed him to Nairobi, I found him dead,” he said.

Did Albert’s wife cry for justice?
A few weeks ago, Albert’s widow, Nevninah Onyango, lamented how the case involving her husband’s death is yet to materialise.
Nevnina shared a photo of a printed pass that had her husband’s snap, with “Justice for Albert Ojwang” written in colours of the Kenyan flag.
