In their attempt to resist, the young men are clobbered by the officers, who collect the balls and go ahead to handcuff them.
They then seemed to search the men before pulling them out. The officers are said to be stationed at Nderi Police Station.
The incident caused uproar among Kenyans, who castigated the police for normalising brutality on civilians unprovoked.
“Mr President, when you give young people cash – 22k to go and do business, one of the businesses they undertake is establishing such entertainment joints. Juu hakuna kazi ingine. Then your government follows them to beat them up, kick them, take away their equipment, and they haven’t committed any offence, what kind of a leader are you?” posed lawyer Wahome Thuku.
“Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere!! Playing pool at any time of the day is not an offence,” said Julious Njoroge.
“National Police Service and Ministry of Interior and National Administration and CS Kipchumba Murkomen. Kindly call your officers to order. These are not things we would want to see trending on social media about our police. Let us allow our young people to work, please!” said Francis Mugo.

On the evening of Saturday, January 10, surveillance cameras recorded eight rifle-carrying police officers assaulting a group of young men who had been playing pool in Nandi Hills town.
How Nandi Hills police attacked pool players
CCTV footage shows about a dozen young men inside a hall with two pool tables, playing quietly until police officers entered.
The recording revealed no signs of criminal activity at the time of the officers’ arrival.
The policemen ordered the youths to lie on the floor, then seized pool cues and used them to beat the group.
Stationed at Nandi Hills Police Station, the officers were heard demanding identity cards and questioning why the men were still out playing late at night.
Despite the youths’ explanations, the assault continued, with the officers taking turns before eventually leaving the hall.
The young men remained on the floor until they were certain the officers had gone, then slowly got up.
How Senator Cherargei reacted to Nandi Hills police brutality
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei strongly denounced the incident, stressing that the young men had committed no crime to justify such police action.
He accused the officers of violating human rights by assaulting civilians without provocation.
According to Cherargei, the officers’ behaviour reflected a glaring lack of professionalism, and he urged Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to take immediate action.
He demanded the interdiction of the officers involved and thorough investigations into their conduct.
The senator revealed that he had already reached out to the victims and formally presented the matter to the Senate’s Standing Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations for follow-up.
He vowed to pursue the rogue officers and ensure they are brought to justice.
