Kanana and her husband, Samson, lived together as husband and wife for 14 years and were blessed with four children: one girl and three boys.

The three boys, Walter, 18, Humprey, 11 and Prince, 7 years old, were travelling from Meru county, where they had been consoling their mum for losing her mother, to Bungoma county, where they lived with their father, when they got into an accident and died.

Why wasn’t Kanana living with Samson?

In the beginning, the marriage was very good, and Kanana, who was only 21 years old, was madly in love with her man, who lived in Nairobi.

Although he loved their children and provided everything, there were things he did that were not working out for her.

“He never liked me going to work despite my having computer packages qualifications; I used to live in his rural home and would travel back to live with him. He was promoted to Thika, and that is when problems in our marriage started,” she said.

“There was a time he stayed for one and a half years without even visiting and I was wondering what kind of a marriage it was, and yet I had three children,” she added.

Kanana was talented in plaiting hair, but whenever she attempted to earn a living with her talent, Samson’s brother would allegedly tell on her, and he would get into trouble.

“One day, he came and started beating me in front of my children, and I ran away with my children to Meru. After three months, I returned, and when I got there, he came the following day, and I thought that we would pick up where we left,” she said.

“I fell pregnant, and that is when I learnt that he had married another Luhya woman as they did not want me because of I am Meru,” she said.

Despite all that, the perseverant woman still ended up getting pregnant for her husband, and when she delivered the baby, he didn’t show up, and she lost her mind and was even unable to take care of their baby.

“I called my mother; I’m sick, and there is no one taking care of me, and they came with my brother. When I told Samson I’m about to die, he said, ‘die you are the one who went to a bad church, die even now’,” she said.

“My sister-in-law called the prayer people, and they started beating me to remove pride. The following day, Samson told my mum to take me away to live with her for six months. I no longer had stress as I used to do business with my mum but when I got better, I went back and found that he was married with two kids,” she said.

Samson eventually told his sister to chase Kanana away, or he would kill her and take his own life. In October, their daughter got into an accident and needed KSh 40,000, and he blocked them until they left the hospital.

The couple eventually agreed that their children should remain behind to get an education, and they co-parented well for some time.

Why were Kanana’s kids in Meru?

In October 2025, things changed when Kanana’s mum died of cancer, and her children came for the burial, but while going back, they got into an accident

“We lived with my boys and stayed for a time here with all of them. When my son completed Form Four, he asked to come as well, citing a lot of premature deaths in their area,” she said.

Eventually, their dad asked for them, and they boarded a bus to Bungoma, but when they were on the road, their dad said he didn’t have fare or fuel for the motorbike.

“I sent Walter KSh 1000 but when I called, he did not pick up the phone; it turned out that they had an accident at 8pm. The following day, their grandmother called and inquired about the kids, and the father reported an accident in the town. When they went there, they found that all the kids had died in the accident,” explained the distraught mother.

“I was very much affected, and their dad called me the same day saying that he had already done the post-mortem and he was told to present the mum so I could be given the police abstract,” she added.

Samson told Kanana to rush with her ID so that they could be given compensation. Before she could even digest all of that, she was slapped with the fact that the elders had decided he would bury the kids by January 3.

Kanana rushed there, and when she got to Bungoma, she found that Humphrey’s face and chest were badly hurt, Prince’s skull and Walter’s chest had been hit too.

Why did Kanana stop the burial?

Kanana, through a lawyer, filed a restriction order to stop the burial until her dowry was paid, and Samson had not given a fine for the boys either, and that meant he needed to return the boys.

“I travelled there with seven people and was supposed to meet Samson with his people, but he ran away, only to return later. Eventually, the Luhya family said that they will have to bury the kids, but I was against it as it was now another woman’s boma,” she said.

“We were told that Samson came with very old people with huge bags who then started spraying substances in the seats that we were to sit on during the meeting. I don’t know what was supposed to happen to us when we sat there,” she added.

The group was supposed to report to court on January 6, but they stole the bodies on January 5 and buried them on January 6, and she learnt that on January 9.

“They stole the bodies, as I was the only one allowed to release them. I had decided to withdraw the case as we had been pushed to January 13, once again,” said Kanana.

“I felt so bad, but after a few days, a policeman allegedly called and said that they should go and sit down and should not forget to carry her ID for compensation. At the moment, he has death certificates, and he is following up on compensation. Those kids deserved a decent send-off; what if they carried out some rituals on the bodies of the boys? The bodies were buried by 6 am…were they even buried in caskets?” she wondered.

According to Kanana, Samson never loved her children, and he also hated her; the alleged barbaric way he treated her has caused her a lot of trauma.
