Kenyans should brace for a mixed bag of weather over the next 24 hours, with the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasting a blend of sunshine, light rainfall, and strong winds.

In its daily forecast issued on Friday, January 30, Kenya Met said most parts of the country will experience sunny intervals.
However, some areas, particularly the western highlands and parts of central Kenya, could receive showers and thunderstorms at various times of the day
According to the forecast by Kiprono, conditions will remain generally calm overnight, with partly cloudy skies expected in many regions.
However, residents in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley should be alert for possible showers and thunderstorms later tonight, especially in the south-western parts.
These counties include Kakamega, Kisumu, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, and Narok, among others.
The department indicated that the same region is likely to see sunny intervals during the morning hours, providing a brief window of favourable weather for outdoor activities.
By the afternoon, however, showers and thunderstorms may develop over a few places, particularly around Mt Elgon, a shift in conditions as the day progresses.
In the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and neighbouring counties such as Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, and Nyandarua, the night is expected to remain partly cloudy.

Sunny intervals are forecast for the morning, followed by light showers in the afternoon, mainly over elevated areas.
Nairobi residents can expect warm daytime conditions, with temperatures rising to about 28°C before cooling to around 15°C at night.
In the North Western region, covering Turkana and Samburu counties, sunny conditions are expected to prevail throughout the day.
However, the weatherman warned of strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots over Turkana county, which could pose risks to small boats, pastoral activities, and lightweight structures.
A similar warning applies to the North Eastern region, which includes Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo counties.
While sunny conditions are forecast to dominate the day, Marsabit County is expected to experience strong southeasterly winds of similar intensity.
Temperatures in towns such as Wajir and Mandera are projected to climb as high as 39°C and 38°C, respectively.
Counties in the South Eastern Lowlands, Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado, are expected to record partly cloudy conditions at night, followed by sunny intervals throughout the day.
Daytime temperatures in these areas will range between the high 20s and low 30s, making for generally warm weather.
At the Coast, residents of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River counties should expect partly cloudy conditions overnight, giving way to sunny intervals during the day.
Coastal towns such as Mombasa and Malindi are forecast to reach daytime highs of about 32°C and 30°C, respectively, with warm nights hovering around 25°C.

In related news, the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) released the climate outlook for the March to May (MAM) 2026 long rains, placing Kenya among the countries to experience wetter-than-normal rainfall during the period.
Released on January 27 after the 72nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 72) in Nairobi, the ICPAC outlook indicated a 45% probability of above-average rainfall in central to western Kenya, Rwanda, parts of Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, South Sudan, Djibouti, and northern Somalia.
Near-normal rainfall is 40% likely in northeastern and southwestern Kenya, coastal Tanzania, most of Somalia, western and eastern South Sudan, and isolated areas of Ethiopia and Uganda.
