Bungoma Family Speaks as Man Dies in Freak Accident While Cutting Tree: “Alishindwa Kutoroka”

A heavy cloud of grief has engulfed a family in Minyali-Nabiswa village in Tongaren, Bungoma county, following the tragic death of a 50-year-old man.

David Marani lost his life at home while in the company of his brother, leaving the entire community devastated. The two siblings were cutting down a tree when it suddenly fell on him, killing him on the spot.

The family alerted police officers, who visited the scene and later moved Marani’s lifeless body to Naitiri Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

Concepta Naliaka, a family member, explained that the tree was initially expected to fall towards a neighbour’s compound, but concerns were raised.

“Our neighbour feared the tree would fall on his house and cause damage, and he did not want any problems. So Marani had to figure out another way to manoeuvre the situation,” said Naliaka.

However, as the 50-year-old and his brother tried to redirect the fall of the tree, a tragic mishap occurred.

“Another tree interfered with the one being cut and accelerated its fall. Some wires got caught on his trousers, making it difficult for him to move out of the way. Marani might have survived, but by the time he managed to free himself from the wires, the tree had already fallen on him,” she painfully recounted.

Catherine Waswa, a resident, urged members of the community to exercise caution when undertaking such risky tasks.

She advised people to be mindful of their surroundings, especially in areas where digging or cutting is taking place, noting that anyone, including children, could easily fall victim to accidents.
