However, these reports have been debunked. According to Nigerian outlet The Vanguard, Edochie personally dismissed the claims, confirming he is very much alive.
In a telephone interview with the Vanguard, Edochie expressed frustration at the recurrent rumours.
He recounted some of the past instances when he was rumoured to have passed away, saying:
“There was a time they said I travelled abroad and died there. At other times, they said that the plane I boarded from Enugu to Ethiopia crashed, and I didn’t survive. There was also a day my wife woke up to prepare for church service when her telephone rang, and the caller said he heard that I passed away that morning. Last year, somebody from Ghana alleged that Pete Edochie was already in the grave.”
Edochie also shared his outlook on life, revealing a philosophy he learned from the late Nigerian leader Nnamdi Azikiwe.
“He said that anybody who wishes you death will die before you. All those people who wished Zik death died before him. That was what I learnt from Zik. On March 7, I will be 79. My father died at 96, so we have longevity in my family.”
Recent social media posts also confirm Edochie’s good health. Actor Browny Ifeanyi Igboegwu and his family visited the veteran actor, and a video from the meeting shared just a day before the rumours emerged showed him in high spirits and full of life.
