Besides basic salaries and fixed allowances, governors, their deputies and CECs enjoy extensive benefits, including comprehensive medical cover, low-interest car loans and mortgage schemes.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) set the salaries and allowances for governors and the county leadership team in a notice published in the Kenya Gazette.

“In exercise of the mandate of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, as provided under Article 230 (4) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya, the SRC has reviewed and set the remuneration and benefits for state officers under the third remuneration and benefits review cycle that covers financial years (FY) 2021/2022 to 2024/2025,” the SRC stated.

Which other benefits do governors, DGs and CECs enjoy?

  1. Airtime allowance: Governors (KSh 20,000), DGs (KSh 15,000) and CECs (KSh 10,000) monthly.
  2. Governors and DGs are entitled to an annual leave allowance of KSh 50,000.
  3. CECs are paid an annual leave allowance of KSh 35,000.
  4. Governors and their deputies are provided with an official residence.
  5. They are paid a service gratuity at the rate of 31% of the annual pensionable emoluments for the term served.
