Carrick has impressed since returning to the club in his second spell as manager, remaining unbeaten in his first five games.
It was actually a spotless streak until they struggled to beat West Ham United on Tuesday night. The Red Devils required another late goal from Benjamin Sesko to salvage a point at the London Stadium.
Carrick has so far overseen impressive wins against the league’s top two and title contenders, Manchester City and Arsenal, and also ended an eight-match winless streak against Tottenham Hotspur.
But despite impressing in his early game, the club’s hierarchy under Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still looking elsewhere for who will replace Ruben Amorim permanently.
Who will Manchester United appoint as head coach?
Manchester Evening News reports that the club wants a ‘superstar name’ and a manager with a proven history of success. Sky Sports further adds that Carrick is still not the favourite for the job despite his unbeaten streak so far.
The former report further claims that former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is on top of the list and fits the type of coach they want.

Tuchel is currently preparing to take England to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his contract will expire at the endof the tournament.
The German is a proven winner, having guided Chelsea to multiple titles, including the 2021 Champions League title. He has also won multiple leagues in Germany and France.
Other managers Manchester United can appoint
The list of managers who could take over the Old Trafford hot seat has dwindled in recent years, with Luis Enrique poised to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain, while Mauricio Pochettino is no longer wanted.
The other option for the Red Devils would be to adopt Chelsea’s style and take a gamble on an unproven manager with a big club like Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner or Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Roberto De Zerbi is also free after he was relieved of his duties as Marseille boss.
The draw against West Ham took them to 45 points, and they are not in action until February 23 when they travel to play Everton.
Supercomputer predicts top four finishers
Separately, Opta’s supercomputer has now predicted who will qualify for the Champions League next season.
The Premier League has four guaranteed places, which could rise to five as England are in a prime position to get an extra spot in the coefficient rankings.
Arsenal and Manchester City have already seemingly locked their places, leaving the rest of the teams to battle for the remaining spots.
