What is the gross salary of a Kenyan senator?

All members serve five-year terms and are paid huge salaries and allowances set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Among them is Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, who serves as the deputy minority whip.

Sifuna has made headlines after he was kicked out as the secretary-general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), even though the court stopped the gazettement of his ouster.

According to a notice issued by SRC and published in the Kenya Gazette, a member of the Senate earns a gross salary of KSh 739,600.

This includes a basic salary of KSh 443,760, a house allowance of KSh 150,000, and a salary market adjustment of KSh 145,840.

What are the other benefits for senators?

1. Committee sitting allowance

The chairperson of a committee is paid KSh 15,000 per sitting and up to a maximum of KSh 240,000 monthly.

The vice chair is entitled to KSh 12,000 per sitting and up to a maximum of KSh 192,000 monthly.

On the other hand, a member takes home KSh 7,500 per sitting and up to a maximum of KSh 120,000 monthly.

2. Official transport

A motor vehicle reimbursement of KSh 7.55 million is given to a senator who purchases a car in order to perform official obligations.

A member will get the motor vehicle reimbursement once during a parliamentary term.

The car maintenance allowance is paid to each member at the rate of KSh 356,525 per month.

3. Mileage allowance

A senator is entitled to a mileage allowance at the rate of KSh 152.6 per kilometre.

The allowance is reimbursed based on the return journey from the Senate to the individual’s county.

The maximum claimable mileage allowance monthly is KSh 462,887.

4. Special duty allowance

Senators serving in the Senate’s leadership earn a special parliamentary duty allowance of up to a maximum of KSh 150,000 per month.

5. Medical benefit

The annual medical cover comprises inpatient (KSh 10 million), outpatient (KSh 300,000), maternity (KSh 150,000), dental (KSh 100,000), and optical (KSh 100,000).

How much do governors earn?

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that governors, their deputies and CECs are remunerated well for their roles in county leadership.

Governors earn a gross salary of KSh 990,000, deputy governors KSh 684,233 and CECs KSh 422,526.

They also get comprehensive medical cover.
