Kindiki rose to the presidency in October 2024 following the impeachment of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

Kindiki’s possibility of being the country’s second in command came up in May 2022 when Ruto was seeking a running mate.
According to the president’s narrations that are on record, his allies, whom he charged with choosing a running mate for him, settled on Kindiki over Gachagua through a vote.
But he (Ruto) chose Gachagua over Kindiki, convincing his team loyalists to endorse his decision.
At the time, Ruto cited Gachagua’s power of political mobilisation and viable strategies.
Their ticket won the presidential vote, ushering in their regime that replaced that of former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
All was well for Ruto and Gachagua until two years later, when their irreconcilable differences culminated in Gachagua’s unceremonious ouster.
