Residents in Nairobi and several regions across Kenya should prepare for rainfall over the next 24 hours, the Kenya Meteorological Department has announced.

In an updated forecast issued on Tuesday, February 17, the weather agency warned that showers and thunderstorms will affect parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley as well as the southeastern lowlands, even as most regions continue to experience sunny intervals.
According to the agency, the forecast, valid from 9pm Tuesday to 9pm Wednesday, February 18, comes after days of intermittent sunny spells.

The agency expects showers and thunderstorms to affect both urban and rural areas, raising the likelihood of wet commutes for city dwellers and rural residents alike.
Which areas will receive rainfall?
The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Nairobi, will experience a mix of cloudy mornings followed by light showers in isolated areas.
Afternoons are likely to see intensified thunderstorms in several locations, according to the KMD.
For Nairobi, residents should anticipate temperatures ranging between a cool 16°C in the early hours and a high of 28°C during the day.
Sunrise in the capital will occur at 6:42am, with sunset at 6:51pm, providing short daylight hours for those planning outdoor activities.
Counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and broader Rift Valley regions are also on alert. Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, and Narok are all expected to experience varying rainfall intensities.
Showers and thunderstorms may hit several areas tonight, with sunny intervals returning in the morning. Afternoon rainfall is likely to intensify, particularly in higher-altitude locations.
Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado counties are forecast to receive scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow afternoon.
In Voi, morning rains will give way to thunderstorms later in the day, with temperatures climbing to 31°C.
Which regions will get moderate to no rainfall?
Along the Coast, partly cloudy conditions will dominate Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River counties tonight.
Morning hours may bring occasional showers, mainly along the South Coast, but afternoons are expected to remain mostly sunny, offering some respite for outdoor activities and tourism.
While rain is not expected in the north-western and north-eastern counties, residents are advised to prepare for strong southeasterly winds.
Turkana and Samburu counties will see partly cloudy skies tonight, followed by sunny intervals tomorrow. Marsabit county could experience winds exceeding 25 knots, even as sunny spells persist throughout the day.
In Lodwar, temperatures will soar to 38°C, dipping to 25°C at night. Garissa and Mandera counties will record highs of 38°C and 37°C, respectively, under largely sunny skies.
