Nairobi – Kenyans should brace for heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours according to the latest update by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

According to the notice, Kenya Met indicated that the rainfall being experienced in several parts of the country is expected to continue on Tuesday, February 24.

“The rainfall being experienced over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and Highlands west and East of Rift Valley, including Nairobi, is expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24hrs. The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs on February 24, and spread to the Southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region, especially the south coast. It is projected to reduce in intensity on 25th February 2026,” Kenya Met said.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley

Kenya Met projected that the counties of Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, and Narok are all expected to experience showers and thunderstorms expected over a few places tonight.

Rains are expected over a few places in the morning, giving way to sunny intervals. Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places in the afternoon.

Highlands east of Rift Valley

According to the weatherman, residents of Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Nairobi should expect showers and thunderstorms expected over a few places tonight.

In the morning, rain is expected over a few places, giving way to sunny intervals. Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places in the afternoon.

North Western

The counties of Turkana and Samburu are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions expected tonight with sunny intervals expected in the morning.

Kenya Met has advised Kenyans in the listed areas to be on the lookout for potential floods, warning that floodwaters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods. Floodwaters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream. People are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” Kenya Met said.

Did Kenya Met issue flood warnings?

Recently, KMD issued an advisory to government agencies, including the Presidency, CS for Environment, National Intelligence Service, Red Cross, and other relevant bodies, to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency preparedness.

Residents in affected regions are urged to stay alert for potential floods and to avoid traversing flooded areas, whether on foot or in vehicles.
