Joseph Owino, widely known as Joe Miles, was more than a man behind the camera. In his mid-20s, he was a passionate storyteller and freelance journalist whose lens documented everyday life across western Kenya.
Joe’s call that changed everything
Journalist Sharon Wyendo told TUKO.co.ke that from community events to quiet human moments, Joe believed every story deserved to be seen.
He hailed from Nyakach Constituency, specifically Jimo, where neighbours watched him grow from a curious young man into a determined creative chasing his dreams.
On Tuesday, March 3, the dream ended in circumstances that have left his family and friends shaken after Joe reportedly received a call from someone posing as a client in need of photography services.
For a freelance photographer, such calls were a normal part of daily life. Assignments often came through referrals or last-minute bookings.
A devastating discovery
According to those close to him, Joe left home expecting nothing more than another day of work, another story to document. He never returned.
As hours stretched into the night and his phone went silent, worry began to spread among his family and friends. By the next day, concern had deepened into fear.
The search for Joe ended in heartbreak when his lifeless body was discovered, sending shockwaves through the community and the wider media fraternity in Kisumu.
Friends and family members who viewed the body described disturbing signs suggesting he may have been brutally attacked.

A dream interrupted
Some reports claim parts of his body were missing, raising chilling questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Near the scene where the body was found, items closely associated with his craft, including his camera and other photography equipment, were reportedly recovered.
For many who knew him, the thought is haunting: the same tools he used to capture life’s moments now lie silent, connected to a tragedy that remains unexplained.
To friends and colleagues, Joe Miles was not simply a photographer. He was a young man driven by curiosity and creativity, eager to document stories that might otherwise go untold.
Joe’s family demands answers
His sudden death has left a painful void.
Joe’s family is now appealing to authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to his death. They want answers and justice.
As tributes pour in from friends, fellow photographers and members of the media community, one haunting question continues to echo:
What really happened to Joe Miles after he received that call on Tuesday?
