What did Kiptoo’s mother say after accident?

Kiptoo’s mother, Beatrice Cheptega, broke down in tears while speaking to the press after learning of her son’s death. She revealed that Kiptoo was her only child, and his loss has left her childless and devastated.

“I have lost all my children now. I do not even have a place to bury Kiptoo. I am in so much pain, and I am told he was hit and killed by a government vehicle. May the government help me and my household,” she said amid tears.

As families mourned their loved ones, conflicting accounts emerged over what transpired at Otonglo, the accident scene.

While some residents confirmed that the accident was caused by a vehicle in the convoy, the Ministry of Health released a statement suggesting otherwise.

“Duale was inside that car. He actually walked out when villagers started throwing stones at him and then got into another car,” said a resident.

Was Duale’s motorcade involved in accident?

According to the ministry, the CS only stopped at the scene to mobilise emergency medical assistance for the victims:

“The motorcade of the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, today stopped at the scene of a road traffic accident at Otonglo, near the Molasses Plant in Kisumu, where the Cabinet Secretary mobilised an emergency medical response to assist the victims. At the time of the incident, the Cabinet Secretary was travelling to Kisumu International Airport from Rarieda,” the statement read in part.

The ministry confirmed that immediate rescue efforts were coordinated, resulting in the evacuation of more than 19 injured persons to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent care.

Two people died at the scene, one succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital, and another passed away while receiving treatment.

Wafula noted that no one should rush the grief but should also allow others to help him or her through the process, and most importantly, seek therapy.

“Therapy can help you go through the stages of grief and even share how you feel with a trusted friend or family member, or even a religious leader, for people who cannot afford a psychologist. It is better to let grief out than keep it in to avoid falling into depression,” she stated.
