There were scenes of relief and gratitude in Mathare after young Jayden, who had gone missing on the morning of Friday, March 20, was safely found and reunited with his mother following hours of anxious searching.

Jayden’s disappearance had sparked panic within the community after he wandered off while playing outside his home at around 10 a.m.
How did Jayden vanish from home?
His mother, Rhoda Khamsa, told TUKO.co.ke that she had been inside the house attending to chores when the two-and-a-half-year-old stepped out to play near the stairs.
Moments later, when she went to check on him, he had vanished, and efforts to locate him in the neighbourhood proved futile.
The news of his disappearance spread quickly, prompting neighbours and well-wishers to mobilise in a desperate search across the densely populated estate.
Appeals were shared widely, with many expressing concern due to the child’s difficulty in speaking clearly, which heightened fears about his ability to ask for help.

How was Jayden found?
Hours later, hope turned into relief when Jayden was found by a Good Samaritan and taken to a nearby police station.
According to his mother, Rhoda Khamsa, a mama mboga saw the youngster trying to cross the road alone and realised he appeared lost, prompting her to intervene.
“Since he was unable to communicate effectively, she chose to ensure his safety by handing him over to authorities, but he was advised to stay with him until his parents came forward,” she explained.
While the family was still searching for him, they stumbled upon him eating at the stranger’s shop and approached her to claim him.
They went to the police station together where the baby was handed over to her biological parents, bringing to an end their days of agony.
Thanks to the information that had already been circulating within the community and online, it was not long before the connection was made.
“I am so grateful,” she said after the reunion. “It has been the longest day of my life. I thank everyone who helped and the person who took him to the police.”

Residents in Mathare also expressed relief at the outcome, noting that the situation could have ended very differently without the quick actions of the person who found Jayden.
