Meru – A family is grappling with an unimaginable loss after a freak accident claimed the life of a young mother in Maua town near Equity Bank.

Irene Kui G had gone to a local salon to have her hair plaited, an ordinary errand that would turn into a tragedy no one could have foreseen.

Where did the stone come from?

A family member told TUKO.co.ke that a large building stone fell from the fourth floor of an adjacent structure under construction. The stone tore through the roof and ceiling of the salon before striking her.

The incident, which occured on Saturday, March 14, caused the 35-year-old catastrophic injuries, including severe trauma to her skull and spine.

Her brother, Martinmarto Martin, recalls receiving a frantic call that would mark the beginning of six agonising days for the family.

“It was not an ordinary accident,” he said, describing the horror of learning how the incident unfolded.

How long was Kui in hospital?

Irene was rushed to intensive care, where doctors fought to save her life. For nearly a week, her family kept vigil by her bedside, clinging to hope as she battled her injuries.

But despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries. Her death has left a deep void, not only within her immediate family but also in the wider community that knew and loved her.

Described as a devoted mother, Irene leaves behind three young children, who her family says carry her likeness and spirit.

“In them, her star will forever shine,” her brother said in a heartfelt tribute, adding that the loss is particularly devastating for her parents who have been forced to bury their only daughter, their youngest child.

Who is Kui’s husband?

Her husband, Shadrack Shampompo Ali, is also mourning the sudden loss of his partner, as friends and relatives rally around him and the children during this difficult time.

“Another of the victims who was injured during the same incident is yet to be treated, yet no one has so far been arrested,” the relative lamented, pushing for justice for the losses.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Ameru community, with many calling for greater safety measures at construction sites to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the family prepares to lay Irene to rest, they are left holding onto memories of the 35 years they shared with her, a life cut short in the most unexpected and heartbreaking way.

Meanwhile, Dr Esther Wanja Wachira, a respected scholar and nurse practitioner, was recently found deceased in her apartment in Culver City, California.
