Nairobi: Former Jubilee secretary general Raphael Tuju has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Karen Hospital after his condition worsened on Tuesday, March 24.

Tuju was rushed to the hospital moments before the arraignment at the Kibera Law Court for allegedly giving false information that unknown people were following him, prompting him to go into hiding.
What caused Raphael Tuju’s illness?
According to his family and lawyers, the police mishandled the former Cabinet secretary during his dramatic arrest, hurting his back.
They argued that Tuju has been a recovering patient from a serious road accident he was involved in three years ago.
Speaking after visiting him, Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated that Tuju did not deserve to be mishandled by the police.
The opposition leader affirmed his support for Tuju by accompanying him to the police station, standing with him in court, and visiting him in the hospital.
He said his defence of Tuju was a matter of basic humanity, decency, and legal obligation, emphasising their commitment to ensuring justice for Tuju.
He criticised the government for ordering police to secure him in the ICU, arguing that Tuju was not a terrorist and was only fighting for his property.
“Raphael Tuju is not a terrorist. He did not deserve to end up in the ICU. What happened to him was police brutality, plain and simple. Why keep three policemen here with taxpayers’ money? We thank the doctor here for feeding them patients’ food. Tuju cannot run and leave his property he has been fighting for. If President William Ruto is a true friend, let him order the police to leave here. It will be a good sign,” he stated.
Earlier, Kalonzo stated that Tuju’s dangerously low blood sugar required immediate medical attention, according to doctors.
Was Raphael Tuju granted a bond?
Meanwhile, Tuju was reprieved after High Court judge Martin Muyu certified his matter as urgent and ordered his release on an anticipatory bond of KSh 200,000 with one surety or a similar amount in cash bail.
This was after his lawyer, George Ndege, sought to block his arrest and continued detention, arguing that the ongoing police presence and control over him at Karen Hospital is inhumane, unjustified, and violates his rights to dignity, liberty, and medical care.

What did Passaris say about Tuju’s condition?
In related news, Nairobi woman representative Esther Passaris stated that Tuju’s current situation called for compassion and urged Kenyans to keep him in their thoughts.
She emphasised the need to prioritise health and well-being, especially during moments of crisis, while also urging restraint from politicising the situation.
Passaris also commended the decision to allow Tuju access to medical care.
