Today, she has grown into a bubbly woman and is helping transform lives across some of the world’s poorest nations, returning hope to communities much like the one she came from.
When was Becky rescued?
According to Fox54 News, Becky’s story began in 1995, when she was discovered abandoned, her umbilical cord still attached.
A passing missionary, out jogging, spotted the bag and made the life-saving discovery. Within weeks, the British missionary couple who found her would adopt her, first placing her in an orphanage before officially welcoming her into their family.
Raised in Kenya during her early childhood, Becky grew up witnessing stark poverty alongside the transformative power of compassion and education.
At the age of 10, her family relocated to East Grinstead, where she continued her education and began shaping her future.
“I was fortunate to be adopted into a family that gave me opportunity,” Becky recalls. “Living in Kenya, I saw both extreme poverty and what education can do to change lives.”
Where does Becky work?
Driven by those early experiences, Becky pursued a career in healthcare, qualifying as an occupational therapist and later specialising in hand therapy and burns care.
After more than four years working in the UK, including time on a burns unit in East Grinstead, she felt a growing pull to return to Africa.
That opportunity came through Mercy Ships, a global charity delivering free medical care via floating hospitals. Becky left her UK post to join their state-of-the-art vessel, the Global Mercy, volunteering as a rehabilitation team leader.
Stationed in Freetown, Becky worked closely with burns patients recovering from life-changing surgeries. But her role soon evolved beyond treatment to something equally impactful, education.

Where is Becky based?
In Sierra Leone, where access to specialised healthcare training has long been limited, Becky became part of a mentorship programme supporting newly trained physiotherapists.
Until recently, aspiring physios had to travel abroad for training; now, local programmes are beginning to fill that gap.
Becky has worked alongside graduates of the country’s first university-level physiotherapy course, helping them develop skills to treat complex conditions, particularly among young burn victims.
“The high proportion of burn patients is under five,” she explains. “You see many accidents from boiling water or soup spilling onto small children. We’re working to build local capacity, so fewer severe cases develop over time.”
Now based at a local hospital near the ship’s dock, Becky continues mentoring and upskilling healthcare workers, ensuring that her impact lasts long after the ship sails.
For a woman whose life began in abandonment, Becky’s journey has come full circle, fuelled by compassion, shaped by resilience, and defined by a quiet determination to give others the chance she was once given.
