Kenya Met Warns of Increased Rainfall Intensity In Select Counties Over Next 24 Hours

Nairobi – The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued its weather forecast for the next 24 hours.

In a notice, Kenya Met said rainfall is expected in a few parts of the country between 9pm Monday, March 30, and 9pm Tuesday, March 31.

According to the weatherman, rainfall intensity is expected to increase in areas within the northeastern region.

“Rainfall is expected over a few parts of the country with enhanced intensity over the Northeast. Strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties,” Kenya Met said.

The counties of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok will experience partly cloudy conditions tonight.

The counties in this region are Nairobi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia and Nyandarua.

Northwestern

In Turkana and Samburu, showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places tonight. Rain over a few places is expected in the morning, before breaking into sunny intervals for the rest of the day.

According to Kenya Met, strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana County.

Northeastern

In Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo, the weatherman projected that showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places tonight.

“Rains are expected over several places in the morning, breaking into sunny intervals. Showers and thunderstorms expected over several places in the afternoon. Strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Marsabit County,” Kenya Met said.

Southeastern lowlands

A few places in this region are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms tonight. Sunny intervals are expected in the morning, followed by showers and thunderstorms expected over a few places in the afternoon.

The counties in this region are Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado.

Coast region

Counties in this region, including Mombasa, Lamu, Kwale, Tana River and Kilifi, are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions tonight.

Sunny intervals are expected in the morning, with showers expected over a few places in the afternoon.

Is Nairobi Dam at risk of bursting?

In a related development, the Water Resources Authority (WRA) issued an urgent warning to residents living downstream of the Nairobi Dam of an imminent flood risk.

In a notice, WRA Nairobi sub-regional coordinator Noel Ndeti cited rising water levels that could breach the dam embankment amid continued heavy rainfall.

Ndeti said part of the dam’s earthen barrier located in the Kibera area along the Ngong River, approximately 5 kilometres southwest of the CBD, is at risk of being washed away due to the ongoing rains.
