Sheila Chebet, a 20-year-old student pursuing mortuary science at KMTC Nyeri, met her boyfriend, identified as Vincent Bet, a fourth-year student at Karatina University, on Saturday, March 28, at a club in town.

The couple was in the company of Vincent’s friend, Edwin Kamau, who had also come along with his girlfriend.

He noted that they were at a club, where Vincent and his girlfriend were drinking alcohol.

“After staying at the club for a while, Vincent texted me on WhatsApp asking if he could take his girlfriend there, and I agreed,” he said.

The four then proceeded to Edwin’s house, which was about two kilometres from Karatina Town.

CCTV footage along the road captured Edwin and his girlfriend leading the way at about 6:47 pm, followed shortly by Vincent and Chebet, who appeared intoxicated at the time.

What happened between Vincent Bet and Sheila Chebet

According to Edwin, the suspect requested to spend the night with his girlfriend at his house, explaining that he lived far away, about 15 kilometres from Karatina University, and did not have enough fare to get them there.

As a result, Edwin and his girlfriend stepped out to go to the market, leaving the other couple in the house.

“If you have visitors, they should inform you when they want to leave, but Vincent did not. When we returned from the market, Vincent and the girl were no longer there,” he shared.

Later that evening, Vincent called Edwin, claiming that they had been attacked, before abruptly hanging up.

Worried, Edwin texted him, asking who had attacked them and where Chebet was. Vincent responded, saying he had left the girl with the attackers and fled with her phone.

The suspect later claimed that he got lost and could not find his way back to Edwin’s house. Concerned, Edwin asked him to share his live location, which showed him about 2.8 kilometres away—not far from where Chebet’s body was later discovered.

In their WhatsApp chats, Vincent questioned why Edwin had not warned him about insecurity in the area and stated that he would report the matter to the police the following day.

The next morning, the suspect visited Karatina Police Station, claiming that he had been attacked and robbed.

“My neighbours said they heard a commotion in my house, with the lady telling Vincent that he had lied about having money. Saturday was the first time I saw Chebet, and sadly, the last,” Edwin stated.

Her clothes were scattered across the area, according to a witness who said the body was discovered on Sunday, March 29, at around 10 am.

Vincent is currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish what transpired and what ultimately led to Chebet’s death.
