Sumari, a resident of Nasholi Village, Kikatiti Ward in Arusha, Tanzania, said the gifts were offered following the alleged killing of her daughter by her husband.

She appealed for justice after rejecting the items, emphasising that her daughter’s life was far more valuable than any material offering.

What happened to Elis Sumari’s daughter?

According to Sumari, her daughter was allegedly killed after refusing to act as a guarantor for her husband, who wanted to take a loan from a local savings group. When she refused, the man reportedly became violent, leaving her with severe injuries.

Sumari explained that the suspect also attacked their son, taking 30,000 Tanzanian shillings (about KSh 1,496) before locking them both inside the house. Mother and child were taken to hospital, but tragically, her daughter did not survive.

“I remember on 15 March, I received news that my child had been beaten in King’ora. I followed up, and the child was treated by a doctor and a nurse, but the condition worsened, so we took them to Tengeru Hospital,” said Sumari.

She expressed shock when her late daughter’s in-laws visited her home with gifts, despite never visiting her daughter in hospital.

“I do not understand the meaning of this gesture. I had asked the government to assist me so that my child’s death could be properly addressed. My child was killed, not that she died from a natural illness,” she said.

Sumari further recounted that her daughter’s co-wife revealed that after the man realised he had injured his son, he rushed him to hospital but left his wife to die.

“He locked the mother inside and threatened her. The police questioned the co-wife, and she identified the person present that day and provided testimony regarding what happened to my child. He even threatened my daughter and grandchild, pointing to a place where he intended to bury them,” Sumari said.

The grieving mother added that this was not the first time her daughter had been forced into such situations, as the husband had previously compelled her to act as a guarantor for other loans.

“The man had previously forced my child to sign for loans, and there is evidence of four prior incidents where he beat and partially paralysed her. He told her, ‘You have no right to live. You have no way to live. You are worthless,” she said.
