The players were each promised units by President William Ruto after their exemplary performances during the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) last year.

What did President Ruto promise Harambee Stars players?

The Head of State was one of the major storylines of CHAN 2024, dishing out and fulfilling lofty promises to the team.

Ruto promised each player KSh one million for every win and KSh 500,000 for every draw in the group stage, save for the last game against Zambia, where they were offered KSh 2.5 million each. In total, the players received KSh 5 million each.

The players were also given units in Ruto’s flagship project, the affordable housing, in a cost-sharing formula.

Inside look at houses President Ruto promised Harambee Stars players

On Thursday, the players and members of the technical bench were shown the project by Hawa Shafi, the Sales Manager in Starehe.

Some of the units, which will be fully completed in December, are fully furnished as seen in the video below.

“The president changed our lives during CHAN. We are very happy with the projects, and we are ready to deposit our part of the deal. The boys are ready,” said team captain Aboud Omar.

“It is a good project for the players and all the staff. We have talked to almost all the players, and they like this project. The players have decided this is a project they want to invest in, and they want the President to support them. It is now just a matter of allocation and paperwork,” added team manager Nick Kimanthi.

Under the tutelage of Benni McCarthy, Harambee Stars exceeded expectations, topping a group that had continental heavyweights Morocco and DR Congo.

Kenya opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over DR Congo before holding Angola to a one-all draw despite playing most of the game with 10 men.

They put on an even better performance against Morocco, beating the eventual champions 1-0, after playing for more than 45 minutes with a man less after Chrispine Erambo’s dismissal to top Group A.

However, Harambee Stars were beaten by Madagascar in post-match penalties to exit the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Zech Obiero speaks after making Harambee Stars debut

Meanwhile, more recently, Zech Obiero expressed his delight after making his debut for Harambee Stars against Estonia.

Obiero set up Ryan Ogam’s equaliser, but Kenya lost on post-match penalties.

He is currently on loan at Tranmere Rovers from League One side Leyton Orient.
