Kenya Met Warns of Increased Rainfall Intensity in 10 Counties Including Nairobi, Kiambu Today

Nairobi – The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of increased rainfall intensity in ten counties over the next several hours.

In its daily weather update, KMD indicated that heavy rainfall will be experienced in the highlands east of the Rift Valley, with strong winds predicted in Turkana and Marsabit.

Weather prediction on April 14

“Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country with enhanced intensity over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi. Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties,” Kenya Met said.

The Highlands east of the Rift Valley include Murang’a, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Kiambu, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Kirinyaga, and Nyandarua counties.

In these counties, rains are expected over a few places in the morning, and showers are expected over several places in the afternoon in these counties.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley

A few places in Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok counties will experience sunny intervals in the morning.

The weatherman predicted showers and thunderstorms over a few places in the afternoon.

Northwestern

Residents of Turkana and Samburu should expect sunny intervals to prevail the entire day today. Strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana County.

Northeastern

The counties of Isiolo, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera and Marsabit are expected to receive rain over a few places in the morning.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places in the afternoon. Strong southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Marsabit County.

Southeastern lowlands

The Kenya Met predicted morning rains over a few places in Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Makueni, and Kajiado counties.

According to the weatherman, these five counties will experience showers and thunderstorms over a few places in the afternoon.

Coast

The counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River will experience showers over a few places in the morning, followed by showers and thunderstorms in Lamu in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration shared a list of areas that risk flooding during the long rains.

The government identified several areas across Nairobi, including Kariobangi, Kayole, Njiru, Tassia, Lang’ata, Kawangware, Kangemi, Lavington, Westlands, Mathare, Eastleigh, South C, Gikomba, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, and Ngong River Forest.

The government urged residents living near riparian and in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety as multi-agency disaster response teams continue to coordinate relief and response efforts.
